Meehan's Millions

071407_meehan.jpgBefore he left the House of Representatives to helm U-Mass Lowell, Marty Meehan spent wildly all over Washington.

He basically rewarded his supporters before heading off. That's mighty polite of him, and the money comes from the $4.8 million campaign war chest. He can do what he likes with it. But shouldn't his supporters be irked because he's basically wasting the money?

He could make some grand, impressive gestures with that cash, but he chose to spend it on restaurants in New York City. He could have spent that money on restaurants in Massachusetts, but only two MA establishments – Butcher Boy Marketplace and Lenzi's Catering Service – got some Meehan cash.

This could be good news for the U-Mass system in that Meehan is getting his excess spending out of his system. You'd think he'd give some of the money to U-Mass, but he gave a $1,250 check to the UMass Foundation. That went to a night at the Pops – you'd think that UMass facilities could use it. He also made a $1,200 donation to the UMass-Lowell athletic department. Nice, but it's peanuts out of $4.8 million.

Theoretically, of course, his supporters should have given him that money because they supported his ideals, not him personally. So the reasonable thing for him to do would be to pass it along to a similar-minded candidate, not blow it on fancy restaurants.
