The Charlie Weis gastric bypass trial is over. After less than half a day of deliberations, a jury decided that Weis did not prove that the doctors who performed his surgery were negligent.
Testimony presented extremely different views of how the surgery went. The doctors said that Weis rushed into things before the surgery. According to the doctors' testimony, Weis hadn't even told his wife he planned to have gastric bypass when he had the initial consultation.
An AP article had an interesting take on the case - painting local doctors Charles Ferguson and Richard Hodin as the only people Weis couldn't boss around. The doctors refused to settle throughout, largely because they felt Weis wasn't realistic about the procedure:
He told doctors he needed get into the operating room quickly, so he could recover by training camp and not be a "distraction." He didn't need the six-week pre-op program. He asked no questions of the doctors.
