Boston's Bridges Are Spewing Chunks, Have Dangling Pieces on their Undersides

chickeny.jpg
Whew! We're so glad all those officials said that our bridges are safe.
What's that? You meant safe to drive ON, not UNDER? Oh!! Silly us, our mistake. Thanks for clearing that up.

The Tobin Bridge, Boston
Authorities were clued in to a potential problem when Dan French of Londonderry, N.H., said last month a softball sized-chunk of concrete smashed his 25-foot boat's windshield. The debris from the Tobin Bridge has not hit anyone, but it damaged boats at the Chelsea Yacht Club, which is located under the bridge. Boat owners say the debris has been falling for about two years, but recently has gotten worse. This week, Massport crews have inspected the underside of the bridge and cut off any dangling pieces.

Route 128 N Overpass, Weston
The Mass Turnpike Authority got a funny feeling about that bridge when Motorists traveling north on Route 128 in Weston had to dodge falling chunks of concrete Thursday night. The pieces of concrete shattered when they made impact with the roadway, spewing pieces across the highway. No one was injured, but three vehicles suffered flat tires. Turnpike crews have since scraped off any other concrete that could possibly fall from under the bridge to prevent future accidents. (WBZ)

Some Drawbridge in Gloucester
Yesterday, the Gordons Fishermanalicious city had an inkling that something aint quite right when divers found structural deterioration in a granite-block seawall that supports the bridge tender's house on Thursday. In response, the drawbridge has been ordered locked in its down position for about 2 weeks while it undergoes emergency repair. Boats must take a detour around Cape Ann. (WHDH)

Happy and safe travels, everyone!
