ps: since guest this morning was good enough to provide links, I'll do the same. I mostly take photos of sandcastles, and actually have no photos of the Boston skyline, but here's an image of the Library of Congress in DC that I humbly suggest supports my view that having something interesting in the foreground can really help a shot:

some interesting controversy spurred by this picture - good to see that the bostonist readers are so quick to point out errors, and better yet to see Korri responding so promptly. I like this photo; but I don't love it - I feel like it would benefit from something in the foreground, like a pedestrian looking up or a car blurring by to fully exploit the perspective. That said, it is a good perspective and composed wonderfully, with the diagonals of the buildings pulling the eye up to the dramatic layer of clouds seperating the blue of the of Exchange Place from the rich blue of the sky. This is not snapshot; Steve clearly put some time into lining up the shot and post-processing the image. I bet many of us would be thrilled to point up and click something like this - I know I would be.

Concerning the two photos linked this morning - while its nice to see Guest provide his/her counter-evidence, they really don't help your case that anyone could randomly shoot something like this. The six year old image of Exchange Place is fine, but the colors are a bit washed out and overwhelmed by shadow, and the composition lacks nearly everything that makes Steve's photo interesting. The more recent photo... well, I don't want to make trouble.

Well, quest, I do in fact have lots of photos of Boston taken just the way I said. If you had half a brain, you could do it too.

Here's one I took about a week ago in Back Bay/South End: http://www.tiny.cc/29Wkj

Original guest here (author of "resampling sucks" post). Re-reading my comment I realized that I sounded overly critical and pissed off. Sorry about that. Thanks for heeding my criticism - the photo looks much better now!

Its always nice to know that some people have lots to say and very little to show...
Just pointing your camera does not lead to a decent photo. Anyone with half a brain would know that.
May I kindly suggest you put your money where your mouth is and go 'point' your camera!!
Then we'll see what you come up with.

Photos like that are a dime a dozen. Just take your digital camera and point it upward along any street in the financial district.

Gosh, today's post was a disaster! And I had such good intentions with Stevecrabb's great photo. Thanks to all the eagle-eyed readers who caught my mistakes.

I believe that's Exchange Place, not the Hancock Tower.

guest - I fixed the photo displayed. We generally push a web version of the image on Bostonist in order to reduce the load time on the site. When done correctly it works out well, but sometimes mistakes are made.

Why are downsampled versions of the flickr originals posted on Bostonist? It looks awful, and photos without a Creative Commons license shouldn't be edited anyway. The other Gothamist sites don't seem to resample their PotD to such poor quality.
