Wherever Charlton Heston Goes, Disaster Is Sure to Follow

081107_heston_kennedy.jpg

Charlton Heston's Apocalypse runs Friday, August 17, through Monday, August 20, at the Brattle Theatre. Check the Brattle's website for showtimes.

While we're all worried about global warming wiping humanity off the map, the Brattle is paying tribute to cinema's biggest disaster magnet – Charlton Heston.

Everyone knows and appreciates Heston's scenery-chewing in the classics Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man, and Soylent "It's people! It's people!" Green, which the Brattle is showing during "Charlton Heston's Apocalypse!" But Earthquake provides the perfect showcase for his talents.

The title of Earthquake tells you all you need to know. An Earthquake strikes Los Angeles. Chaos ensues. But Heston's character has more problems to deal with than shaky ground. He's got a boozy, woozy wife (Ava Gardner) on his hands, not to mention a mistress (Genevieve Bujold) who wants to spend more time with him.

Glenn Kay and Michael Rose, who wrote the book Disaster Movies described Heston's work in this movie as "decidedly outsized." If you're not into Heston, surely you can appreciate Richard Roundtree as a daredevil motorcyclist, Victoria Principal in an afro wig, and the ubiquitous George Kennedy doing the hero-as-schlep routine he does so well.
