Two BC football players and an officer with the State Police have been charged with assault after a ruckus at The Greatest Bar. Sean Maney, 28, of Watertown, was enjoying himself with some friends at the bar when offensive tackle Gosder Cherlius and defensive back DeJuan Tribble allegedly decided they had a right to their space. The Statie, Sgt. Joseph Boike, tried to get them to move. Maney, like any logical person faced with people who allegedly think they are more important than they are, refused. A fight ensued, and Maney wound up in the hospital with a broken neck.
Cherlius in particular had an unfair advantage - he is 300-plus pounds. Maney is a software programmer. Think about that. Who is going to win that fight? Obviously Cherlius and friends, all big boys, needed a little extra space at the bar, but they should have fought fair. Pitting a husky guy against a scrappy programmer is not going to end well.
Boike, who also part-owner of the bar, is now on paid administrative leave. He is also accused of assaulting the girlfriend of Maney's brother.
As for the players, BC football coach Jeff Jagodzinski will not discipline Cherlius and Tribble. All charges alleged, and so forth. But being a football player probably helps, huh? Unless you're Michael Vick. BC might want to consider sending its football players to charm school. Just recently, a former linebacker was arraigned for dealing drugs off-campus.
All charges alleged until proven under law. That eagle looks friendly now, but, if you don't move when he asks you to, he won't ask a second time. Got that?
