Harvard is breaking through its upper crust and trying something daring – a nighttime football game! What a novel concept!
But scheduling its first nighttime football game – also the first home game - has been more difficult than they thought. For starters, the original date fell on Yom Kippur. Second, residents of Allston are not happy with Harvard's plans. Residents of Allston are never happy with Harvard's plans.
The Yom Kippur problem was fairly easy to fix. Harvard and its opponent, Brown, were able to push the game back one day, but Allston is still worried about the noise, traffic, and drunken fans that the game is sure to bring. Night games are a common phenomenon, but who can blame Allston for not wanting to deal with tailgating Massholes who are drunk and Ivy League?
Some Allston residents told the Allston-Brighton TAB that they were more angry that Harvard didn't declare its plans up front. The noise is a side concern. Harvard's rep said that they notified Allston on August 6 and that should have been plenty of time. But neither Harvard nor Allston residents are really going to be satisfied.
The game will be on Saturday, September 22, if you want to observe the Ivy League wildlife.
