Fall Is Here! The First U-Haul Gets Peeled on Storrow Drive!

082807_u_haul.jpgIt's like Punxsutawney Phil at Groundhog Day. It's not really fall until a student plows his or her U-Haul into an overpass on Storrow Drive.

This particular incident happened on Saturday afternoon, and the driver didn't stop until he or she took the roof clean off the U-Haul! The pictures on WBZ show the roof of the U-Haul dangling from the overpass, like a rumpled bedsheet. Of course, the incident clogged Labor Day weekend traffic.

A writer for WBZ was subtle when discussing the driver's intelligence: "There is a sign at the top of the bridge that warns drivers of the 10-foot height."

Do the math, students. Ask the friendly U-Haul clerk how high your truck is, and remember, you can't get a truck that's over 10 feet tall under an overpass that is 10 feet high unless you grease it in Crisco. And you'll probably still have trouble.

Then again, no matter how much kind souls try to warn people, someone somewhere is going to try to wedge a U-Haul where it does not need to go. Someone should probably charge admission to prime viewing areas along Storrow Drive at this time of year.

Did you get a picture of the U-Haul roof in question? Please do send it along or tag it with "Bostonist" in your Flickr account.

You don't even need to ask your friendly U-Haul representative. Most of those trucks should have the height written backwards on the truck in a convenient spot so that it is easily viewable through the rear view mirror (hence the backward text).
