Manny's still hurt. Okajima is cranky. Team officals are anonymously bellyaching that bringing back Mike Lowell next year might be too expensive.
Boy, it's fun being in first place, huh?
Last night vs. Toronto was a fairly ho-hum game, with a disappointing ending. Curt Schilling pitched well again (See? All is not lost.), but Manny Delcarmen and Okajima gave up killer home runs to Troy Glaus and Vernon Wells, respectively, and the Jays avoided getting swept.
The Sox could have blown it open in the seventh. They had the bases loaded with one out, but J.D. Drew struck out, followed by Youkilis. When Youk came up after J.D.'s whiff, it was pretty clear the fans weren't yelling, "YOOOOOUK" at that moment. This mention of J.D. Drew might be a good time to remind everyone that the Red Sox aren't sure they can find the money to resign Mike Lowell next season.
So a disappointing loss. The Yankees were pummeling the Mariners, but we're still six games up, with a long weekend by the healing waters of Chesapeake Bay coming up. Tim Wakefield gets back on the mound tonight against the O's' Garrett Olson.
The Patriots are readying for Sunday. Bill Belichick has attracted the wrath of Minnesota coach Brad Childress for some byzantine player maneuvering. And you read yesterday about the case of the furious drunk ex-punter. As long as all this stuff stays on the sidelines. Tonight is the new traditional Thursday Night opener of the NFL season, with the (spit) defending (cough) champion (yecch) Colts hosting New Orleans.
