Films at the Gate This Weekend

Films at the Gate will be shown at the vacant lot on Hudson Street between Beech and Kneeland. For more information, go to the official Films at the Gate website.

Thanks to the Asian Community Development Center, Films at the Gate has been showing Kung Fu movies for free all this week. The event is BYOTO - Bring Your Own Take Out.

Each night, Films at the Gate will run short films between 7 and 8, and the main feature kicks off at 8 pm. The weekend portion of the series starts in grand style with tonight's Shanghai Express (aka The Millionaire's Express), featuring Sammo Hung as director and star.

This is the original trailer, which includes hooker brawling, the beefy Hung kicking some ass, and the immortal line, "Don't shoot us! We're morons!"

Saturday night's feature is a "mystery movie" that the Films at the Gate website describes as "swordfighting action with a light touch." The series ends on Saturday night by returning to the basics - "Project A" starring Jackie Chan, before he was attached at the hip to Chris Tucker.

If you'd like to learn more about the birth of the series, start by reading up on last year's inaugural festival and meeting Jean Lukitsh, curator for Films at the Gate and contributor to the Historical Dictionary of Hong Kong Cinema.

Trailer posted on YouTube by Kung Fu Cinema.
