Follow-Up: The Downtown Steam Pipe Explosion

The steam-pipe explosion yesterday sent asbestos into the air and freaked everyone the hell out. Boston got lucky. Remember what happened in New York.

The city is testing for asbestos, and several people were decontaminated. As of this morning, Otis Street was still closed.

The pipe is owned by Trigen. Trigen is the same company that Menino has been butting heads with over pipe maintenance. Menino wants the Department of Public Utilities to regulate pipes, and, when he gets back from his Panama trip, he will probably keep pushing for it.

The latest incident should make the city act now - those pipes are old, and they are toxic. Some of them haven't been renovated since the 1950s. They need to be fixed or replaced before something worse happens.

Can't get enough of that album cover! From Amazon.
