Hawaiian Nights will run from 7:30 to 11 pm tomorrow, Friday, September 14, with a rain date of September 15 at Union Square Plaza. For more information, visit the Somerville Arts Council ArtsUnion website.
We're suckers for all things Tiki, and ArtsUnion's Hawaiian Nights promises to provide the next best thing to being on Waikiki with "Hawaiian Nights."
ArtsUnion will provide the appropriate atmosphere, including dance and music. For those of you who mistake a drunken butt-wiggle as hula, Polynesian Dance Arts will perform, and you will learn how the hula is done. The music comes from DJ Brother Cleve and Waitkiki, and the movies will include either the Elvis vehicle Blue Hawaii or the documentary Hawaiian Rainbow. (We're voting for the Elvis.)
In honor of the event, here is a recipe for the ultimate Hawaii drink, the Blue Hawaiian:
1 oz light rum
1 cherry
2 oz pineapple juice
1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
1 oz cream of coconut
1 slice pineapple
Blend light rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut with one cup ice in an electric blender at high speed. Pour contents into a highball glass. Decorate with the slice of pineapple and a cherry. If you want to be really crazy, ditch the coconut and up the pineapple juice. [from Drinkmixer.com]
Sip slowly, and wave goodbye to summer.
