Mr. Lonelyhearts: Tom Brady
Tom Brady has been opening his mouth a lot lately. Today, he brushed off TapeGate as nothing, but he is also taking a stab at giving men dating advice. Here's what he had to say in an interview with Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated:
"You can't let them know you're that interested. I try to get this across to my best friend. He's really into this girl, but I keep telling him she's got to leave that date thinking, 'What's wrong with me?' "
Ouch. Tom Brady may be able to get away with cultivating low self-esteem in women because he's loaded and good-lookin' and has a Super Bowl ring [OK, you're right - three rings - Ed. note], but attention ordinary men - do not try this at home.
The Rick Reilly piece is also fascinating because Reilly manages to pump up Brady's ego to tremendous proportions, describing him as a sex god of the ages: "See, Brady is Namath with a milk mustache. Mothers want him for supper and daughters for everything after."
Eww. The thought of Brady moving from cougar to kitten, spreading his seed everywhere, and then giving guys dating advice is terrifying.
Since Brady has been put in the position of giving advice (SI approached him, not the other way around), then we'll give him a little - just shut your yap and play ball. You're good at that. Quite good, actually. Go with your strengths. You are obviously not so hot at dating (Exhibit A: Babydaddygate).

You mean three Super Bowl rings.

I have no words. Only laughter. Lots and lots of laughter. Oh Tommy, what are you DOING?

At the risk of exposing my inner male pigness...is there a guy out there who wouldn't want to follow Tom's dating model?
C'mon guys. A supermodel and an actress at the same time?
As the saying goes 'women want him and men want to be him'.
As for his specific taste, Gisele is lacking compared to Bridget.

No, don't shut your trap. We love hearing you make a fool of yourself. Keep it up! :)

"but attention ordinary men - do not try this at home."
Unless you want to actually succeed at dating, that is.
It's a sad state, but Mr. Brady does speak the truth.

I couldn't help but take some offense at the "She's got to leave that date thinking, 'What's wrong with me?'" comment. A real gentleman would make a date feel comfortable, and a mature person with manners and class wouldn't bother with this sort of juvenile mind games. I do agree that early dates should NOT go on too long, and that you should always leave the person you're dating "wanting more," but that's taking things too far IMHO. I'm glad I found this article, and that Ms. Roberts spoke up about this. I really like Tom otherwise, since he is supposedly such a "nice guy," but I wish he didn't have this attitude toward women.
This is my first post to this blog - thanks for reading.

I'm not sure if you read the underlying article by Rick Reilly but you should, sydney. Reilly is a superior writer.
I'm surprised by the dating comment. I suppose I'm more surprised he said it on the record than that he believes it. He sorta exposed some guy stuff to a general audience.
As far Tom's ego, I'm sure it is ample. But, honestly, the Namath comparison is on target.
I wonder if Gisele reads SI.

I did make a point of reading the article just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I've never ready anything else that Reilly has written, so I will not argue that he isn't an excellent writer. The comments were posted Q&A style, and I just referred to the answer to the "dates?" question and the answer that Brady was quoted as giving. So I'm not sure what Reilly's superior writing skills have to do with Brady giving such an immature answer, but again, I'm not at all arguing that Reilly isn't a good writer. I was also surprised that Brady said what he did on record, and also wondered if he ever pulled this crap on either Bridget or Gisele, and how long he thinks men need to keep up this act! I agree that Tom must have an ego (and it is certainly justified given what he's accomplished), but I've read before what a "nice guy" he's supposed to be, and even in this article, Reilly refers to Brady's "humility," "shyness," "integrity," and "modesty." These traits just don't square with a comment that makes him seem like a tool when it comes to dating. IMHO, dating should be about spending some time getting to know someone, which is hard enough without playing games. Thanks for your response to my post.

i think people who are fulfilling their calling in life can behave this way when it comes to dating. Yeah it sucks but hey let's face it some men and women have lousy self esteem and will be taken advantage of by people like Tom Brady - successful in that First World way.
Harsh but true. Even when a Tom Brady is dating a woman and mucking up her self esteem at least she will have the experience of being near the white hot spotlight of fame. Hopefully Giselle and Tom are reflecting in each other's glory so much that some poor women will be saved from his charms.
But the problem is when you have some boy who works at a video store/bowling alley/bar with meandering to non existent life goals (bass player/rapper/producer/beatmaker) and
zero ambition thinking he can date or treat women like toys.
And he can ...
because there are people who don't have the sense to step away from such toxicity and will have nothing else to show for it than a neck cramp from having sex on that broken futon and no returned phone calls after the sex on that futon
I guess I'm saying if I have to be played, I'd rather be played by a rich guy with First World success (wealthy, connections, privilege, access)than a shlub with a NetFlix subscription and PBRs.

The veneer of perfection has worn off of the Golden Boy. Apparently Tom Terrific is a mere mortal after all. He looks good, his bank balance is even better, and then he opens his mouth.
I suppose he meant to say to leave them ''wanting more'' but he used guy talk. I hope so.

I hope he meant that, too! I do have to agree with everything said in the previous posts. I'd rather be played by a rich guy, too (although I'd still rather not be played - who does if they have any sense or any self esteem?) Let's hope we can all have healthy, happy relationships - hopefully with rich men (or women) :) Thanks for the posts!
