MittWatch: Phoney Friends?

091207_fred_thompson.JPGA man is as good as the company he keeps, right? If so, then former Massachusetts governor and presidential aspirant Mitt Romney needs to make some new friends as soon as possible.

Last week, someone linked to Team Romney was accused of putting up a website called "Phoney Fred." The website criticized fellow presidential candidate/TV actor Fred Thompson, who is already smoking Romney in the polls. The site offers the many moods of Thompson, including Fancy Fred, Five O’clock Fred, Flip-Flop Fred, McCain Fred, Moron Fred, Playboy Fred, Pro-Choice Fred, Son-of-a-Fred, and Trial Lawyer Fred. Well, Thompson is an actor.

"Phoney Fred" was the brainchild of Wesley Donehue, who knows Warren Thompson, who knows Romney. Thompson is Romney's adviser in South Carolina. Three degrees of separation right there! Romney put out a statement saying he knows nothing of "Phoney Fred."

The site was promptly taken down, but the childish nature of "Phoney Fred" can be found courtesy of Google Cache and Wonkette.
