Armin Van Buuren will be at the Avalon tonight, September 16, starting at 9:00 pm.
Ahh … trance.
That word may mean different things to different people, but at the closing party* for Avalon Boston tonight, it means that world-renowned DJ Armin Van Buuren will be supplying the last dose of euphoria for the devoted weekend crowd at the city's most renowned dance hub. Home for years to house, trance, techno and all forms of early rave music when the rock bands roll out by 10, Avalon has served us well.
As for Van Buuren, he's been doing well for himself by holding the second position for the public-voted DJ Top 100. Aside from being a veteran of the scene, Armin has taken trance to a new level by lodging it between the present and future. Trance developed out of the early 90s rave scene, and many trance DJs fall because they stay dated, depending so much on the build-up throughout the track that the climax itself is no longer fulfilling.
“I think trance is becoming a broader term for a lot of different genres; it's no longer a specific kind of music within the dance scene,” says Armin on his MySpace page. “Trance has elements of all different types of music...These days it's really hard to label a specific sound. Styles are coming together and evolving into this all-over new sound, which is basically dance music going back to its roots. There's so much good music out there and I don't want to limit myself to just one style.” Other names you might know which carry the trance torch are Paul Oakenfold, Tiësto, and Paul Van Dyk.

So, yeah, before Armin Van Buuren heads off to the dance mecca of the Universe (read: Ibiza) on Tuesday, be sure to attend the final frontier of trance in Boston before everyone figures out where to go next. For sure, much of it will move over to Axis, but there's a community in itself that needs to find a new home. Though it's certain the believers will work it out, there's more to come at Axis in the next few months. Keep your eyes open for brothers Ali & Basti of the Tiefschwarz moniker to hit Axis on Friday, September 21.

*Van Buuren might be the closing party for only one type of music. The closing show will be the Dropkick Murphys on September 30.
