Sports Redux: The Time Has Come

86761499_45cb0705b6_m.jpgWe thought we might be able to squeak by with optimism (whether produced naturally or provided by alcohol), we thought that the worst was behind us. But here we are, rounding that final bend before we plunge into the postseason and...well...the Sox lost to the Blue Jays on Tuesday night, 4-3, while the Yankees pulverized the Orioles, 12-0. Here we go, gang: only two and a half games separate Boston and New York.

Sox fans trying to resist pushing the panic button are faced with some grim facts: Manny will return to the lineup pretty much whenever he feels like it. Dice-K has been pulled from his planned Wednesday start so Clay Buchholz can give it a whirl. Eric Gagne showed us just why folks say "pulled a Gagne" when it comes to a blown save situation. The Sox have lost three straight, including two to a team out of contention in a stadium that folks don't even bother going to anymore. The pitching, save Beckett, is pretty shaky across the board. The Sox look tired. We feel tired.

As a commenter put it in response to a Tuesday Rob Bradford story, "I see no signs at all that this team even wants to win the division. The fact that they've allowed the Yankees to come back and win the season series is unbelievably pathetic."

We here at Bostonist aren't saying the Sox are pathetic, but something's up and we don't like it. We're frustrated in same same vein as Red Sox Chick: the Sox look as if they are content coasting to the post-season, "blowing home field advantage and the opportunity to pick the playoff schedule [Francona] prefers."

Whatever the mindset within the organization, here's reality outside Fenway: panic is setting in.

Here are the quick and gory details of Tuesday's game: Sox take a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning. Gagne blows the lead. There you have it. What more do you want to know, you masochists?

So now we have today's Buchholz start, then a day to lick our wounds travel to Tampa Bay. Please, Devil Rays, don't let us down. We're counting on you.

It's a sad day in the sporting world when the highlight of the day is news someone else has been accused of cheating in the NFL - the Jets, no less! Setting into motion what may be one of the biggest "cry foul" seasons in league history (it's a slippery slope, after all), the Ravens are accusing the Jets of using illegal tactics to draw offsides calls from the defense. Ravens coach Brian Billick paid the Jets a backhanded compliment in his complaint, noting that the team was highly skilled at its cheating ways. Goes to show you: the Jets get a compliment when they cheat, but when the Pats reportedly cheat, everyone's talking about how they knew they were doing it all along. Once again, New England can't get no respect.
