Attention, Massholes! Back Away From the Cell Phone!

State legislators are debating whether or not to ban the use of cell phones while driving. Last Tuesday, the Transportation Committee discussed a bill that would ban the use of all handheld phones in cars while permitting hands-free phones for grownups.

Anyone under 18 caught with a cell phone, handheld or otherwise, would have his or her permit or license suspended for a year.

State Senator Steven Baddour opposes the ban for adults, but he obviously doesn't realize that, when it comes to stupidity, age ain't nothin' but a number. Has he not nearly been hit by a Masshole clutching a handheld phone, engaging in a full-on love spat, and driving at the same time?

Senator Baddour should stand by an intersection some time, and watch Massholes blow past the Stop sign or almost turn right into the old lady trying to get across on her walker. He would soon realize the chances that these reckless Massholes are talking on a cell phone are pretty high.

In New York, where using hand-held phones while driving is illegal, a TV station reported that police officers put the law into overdrive for a week in Albany. During that time, they handed out 500 tickets to drivers who weren't able to break their cell phone addiction.

Given New York's lame record, separating a Masshole from his or her precious wireless device might require nothing short of surgery. But that doesn't mean a ban on driving while handheld chatting isn't a bad idea.
