Representing on Reality TV: The New Season

092207_guylan.jpgWho will be the next Boston Rob? Who cracked us up as much as "Mr. Boston" did when he wooed Tiffany "New York" Patterson? A new season of reality television has started, and Massachusetts residents are on many of the shows, so we'll take a tour of how they're doing each week.

--Kid Nation: A child from Upton is participating in Kid Nation, the reality show that has stirred up all manner of controversy regarding child labor laws. 11-year-old Guylan Qudsieh must help run a society of kids without the help of adults. Qudsieh, who already seems to have that little-adult quality of child actors, didn't seem too concerned about the lack of supervision in his interview with the Metro West Daily News: "It really wasn't bad."

It may not have been bad for young Qudsieh, but Kid Nation was awfully bad for us. For starters, 40 kids are on the show, and it's hard to tell all the shrieking critters apart. We don't blame the youngsters for being "shrieking critters." We'd be that way, too, if we were stuck in out in the New Mexico desert.

--Biggest Loser: Neil Tejwani, a 25-year-old chemical engineer from Marblehead, weighed 421 when he showed up to start taping for the Biggest Loser. The show's cast members split into three teams: the Red Team, the Blue Team, and the Black Team, who thought they were voted off the show but wound up in the desert for a special ass-kicking from fitness drill-sergeant Jillian Michaels.

Tejwani made it on the Blue Team and didn't get the desert ass-kicking. But Neil was having trouble keeping food down, and he got a dressing-down from Bob the Trainer for not firing up his metabolism. (Jillian would have picked him up with one hand and slammed him to the ground.) In the end, Tejwani did fine - he lost 10 pounds to reach 389.

--America's Next Top Model: The aspiring models strutted their stuff for Tyra Banks and the crew, and Sarah the Boston Babydoll shocked them with a totally vaudeville trick - pulling a long tissue out of her nose. Tyra seemed grossed out, but we thought it was grosser when another Top Model contestant showed off her "kittycat" bikini-waxing technique. Mila also bounced and smiled all over the place and showed that she might need a sedative.

In the first episode, a group of 30 women are whittled down to 13, so the audience got to know some of the women who didn't make it into the final 13. One of them was a beautiful Boston-bred woman, and we didn't like how Tyra and her buddies made fun of her accent when she said she was a "Bartender." Tyra immediately goes, "BAH-tender." Yeah, that joke gets mighty old after a while.

--Beauty and the Geek: Two local geeks represent. John from MIT, a juggling geek who appears to have the potential to turn hot over the season. There's the beauty Jennifer who went to Northeastern. And then there's the female geek from Tufts, who we haven't seen much of because she was brought in as a surprise, as if female geeks don't exist!

--Survivor: Denise on the winning Fei Long tribe is a lunch lady from Massachusetts, which is really cool because Survivor contestants have been getting more actor-y over the seasons. Denise also unapologetically sports a mullet, which we'd make a comment about, but we won't because she could kick our ass, and we want her to win.

--And one happy ending: Fat March, in which overweight people walked from Massachusetts to Washington DC in pursuit of weight loss and a cash prize, is over. Sam Amado, of Everett, and Chantal Carrere, of Brookline, finished the march. Amado lost 85 pounds and is now 297 pounds. Carrere lost 51 pounds and is now 199 pounds. Each one is $40,000 richer.

Anyone missing this season? Let us know in the comments.

David Olsen is a resident of Somerville on Beauty and the Geek. Boston appears well represented on that show.

Courtney from Survivor is represented as "from NYC" but she's actually a Boston native who moved down to NYC a couple years back.

Yeah the PAHK the CAH thing on ANTM sucked.
