Election Day, Again: East Boston, City Council Prelims

092407_power_is_yours.gifIf you're in East Boston, it's time to vote for State Representative of the First Suffolk district, the seat vacated by Anthony Petruccelli when he won a State Senate spot. Here are the candidates, all Democrats:

Carlo Basile - Basile is officially a Democrat, but he is more of a moderate - or an undercover elephant - in that he endorsed Romney in the past and worked for Kerry Healey's failed attempt to be governor. He was also a former chief of staff for the RMV.
Mary Berninger - A local activist. The Hubster notes that she may be the "least politically connected" of the group.
Jeff Drago - Definitely an insider having worked as Mayor Menino's liaison to Boston, and he also has a picture of himself with T-Vag on his website. He definitely has the hook-up.
Gloribell Mota - If Drago is the insider who has connections, Mota appears to be more of a traditional progressive. She used to work for City Councilor Felix Arroyo and is endorsed by Blue Mass Group. She might have the advantage as a Spanish speaker and daughter of immigrants in a district that is 40% Latino, though the Phoenix argues that's debatable.

Jimbo at The Hubster has covered this election in great detail - if you need more information, The Hubster is the source.

And that's not it. Even though the preliminary election for the at-large City Councilor seat was cancelled, preliminary elections will be held for City Councilor in District 9 (Allston/Brighton) and in District 7 (Roxbury). District 9 is wide open with five people in the race. The Allston-Brighton TAB offers an overview of the candidates: Mark Ciommo, Greg Glennon, Rosie Hanlon, Tim Schofield, and Alex Selvig. The District 7 race includes the current incumbent, Chuck Turner. Carlos Henriquez and Althea Garrison--who has apparently run for everything--are running against Turner.

This Commission has only 2 employees: 1 full-time and 1 part-time, both of which the Mayor can easily fire. The Commission reports to the City Council Post Audit & Oversight Committee (617-635-4644/1273), whose members do whatever the mayor tells them to do. The mayor and city council strangle the BFC every year, give it almost no budget, and ask it no questions, which ensures that the Commission accomplishes almost nothing. That will continue until we elect a mayor and a council who fund the BFC, staff it, and ask it some real questions.
