Boston Blotter: The Oldest Trick in the Book

092607_KeystoneKops.jpg--Someone made a big mistake on Sunday by letting a sexual assault suspect go to the hospital without supervision. Police recaptured Edwardo Aponte of Dorchester this morning, but the incident makes us wonder what the BPD supervisor on duty was thinking.

On Sunday, Aponte said he was sick, went to New England Medical Center in an ambulance, and walked out. Isn't that the oldest trick in the book? Even the characters of Comedy Central's Halfway Home would be wise to that. In another blunder, the BPD didn't warn people of Aponte's escape until the Globe asked yesterday afternoon.

--At least it's not all bad news for the BPD. The BPD quickly picked up three men suspected of shooting a man in a drive-by. The man was shot in the face at the corner of Mount Pleasant and Dudley. The perps took off in a Mercury Sable. The Herald reports that Officer Scott Roby was nearby working a detail when he heard word of the shooting on the radio. He saw a Mercury Sable, and he jumped in front of the car and found a loaded pistol and a spent shell casing inside.

Jason Campbell and James Campbell of Roxbury and Shawn Scott of Dorchester were arrested for the shooting.

--A Mercedes on Newbury Street doesn't sound all that strange – unless it's been stolen. Ryan Adams of South Boston allegedly stole the car after breaking into a house in Stoneham on Monday. Adams wasn't aware that the car had LoJack and that police were watching him.

Adams took the car to Niketown Boston for some shopping yesterday. Even without the LoJack, Adams couldn't stop drawing attention to himself. He had double-parked. A woman was also waiting for Adams in the car, suggesting that Adams may have been trying to impress her with a hot ride and a shopping trip.

--A man was stabbed to death off the Jamaicaway early this morning. The body was found by a silver pickup truck. The BPD said the victim was white and in his 30s, and they don't think the stabbing was random. Elsewhere on the BPD blotter, police picked up three young men for pot and guns, and Operation Squeeze netted five prostitutes.

All charges alleged until proven under law. Image of the Keystone Kops from Wikipedia.
