Weekly Dig Staff Shake-Up - Brodeur No Longer Editor
A post appeared on Universal Hub earlier today saying that Editor Michael Brodeur was out at the Weekly Dig. A Phoenix post backs that up, and Dig founder and president Jeff Lawrence sent out a press release. Here's the text of the release:
Boston's Weekly Dig announced today that the editor, Michael Brodeur, is no longer with the company as part of an editorial restructuring, “Michael has been a huge part of the Dig for over four years and we wish him all the best. This wasn’t an easy decision,” Jeff Lawrence, founder and President, said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if his byline shows up in the Dig in the future though. He’s a great writer and it’s already been discussed.” Brodeur will not be immediately replaced.
Regarding Brodeur's byline appearing in upcoming issues, Adam Reilly at the Phoenix heard different: "Sources close to the paper tell Media Log that Brodeur wasn’t offered a chance to return to his old slot writing about arts and entertainment; instead, he was just axed." If he's axed, and no one else is in line, who will fly the plane?
Besides Brodeur's departure, the Weekly Dig has a new VP of Business and Marketing, Alfred Wilson, who spent five years with the Phoenix Media Communications Group.
Brodeur's departure comes as a surprise to Bostonist. While the Weekly Dig's letter pages have been filled with complaints about the slick cover, overabundance of ads, and Stuff@Night-i-fication of the weekly, the Dig also made major strides recently. The biggest change involved an upgrade of its website, and the new page is a huge improvement over the clunky, slow weeklydig.com of the past.
Let the game of editorial musical chairs begin. The Improper Bostonian is hiring.

It hasn't been as good for the past year or so. And yeah.. the glossy cover still sucks (except the Train issue)
This is the worst news that I've heard all day...even though it's not even 10am. The Weekly Dig IS Brodeur.
This is a total bummer. I'm curious to see what happens next...
Who indeed will fly the plane? Where is the plane going? Who is still on board, and do they know how to use their inflatable seat cushions in the event of an emergency? Will there be tasty snacks and in-flight duty-free shopping?
Sad, sad, fucking sad.
