When Manholes Attack: Flame-Thrower Edition

flame.jpg
Those angry manholes are at it again, and unfortunately for all of us, they're stepping up their game.

This Bostonist was walking home this afternoon and noticed some black smoke coming out of a manhole on Hanover Street. The North End is a pretty crazy place, so Bostonist didn't think much of it and continued on our way.

We should know better than to trust a manhole, any manhole. The smoke kept coming and spread to two other manholes down the street. The Globe reported what happened next: "there was a "big burst" and a 25-foot flame came out of a manhole in front of his restaurant." Electricity was cut to 30 some odd buildings in the area as a precaution and NStar reported it a cable failure--which happens "from time to time." Ooohhh, ok, great, that makes us feel really safe. Don't forget that the North End is notorious for manhole problems. At this point residents get concerned when TOO much time goes by without a blow-up.

So let's recap. Last week, we had errant manhole covers attacking innocent bystanders, and tonight we have fire geysers shooting into the air. Be afraid, Boston, and look alive. You never know when a manhole will decide that you're to be the next victim!

Photo of Lucy Liu kickin' ass with a flamethrower from a crazy russian movie site. What if SHE is behind the manhole hissy fits?
