Fun and Fluffy: 90th Anniversary Celebration of Fluff
What the Fluff? A Celebration of Union Square Invention
Saturday, Sept. 29, 4:00 to 7:00 pm (rain date Sept. 30)
Union Square, Somerville
More info
This year marks the second annual festival for Marshmallow Fluff, along with the 90th anniversary of the treat invented by the culinary genius Archibald Query in Somerville's Union Square.
Query whipped up the treat in his own kitchen and ended up selling it to the Durkee-Mower company, which carefully guards the Fluff brand. The local delicacy still appears in the beloved Fluffernutter sandwich, which is a combo of peanut butter and Fluff. The company also provides recipes for fudge and treats so you can celebrate the Fluff milestone at home.
The Somerville ArtsUnion and Union Square Main Streets have planned many events that take Fluff to a new level. Adriel Azure and his Dream Indigo Orchestra, B for Brontosaurus, and Thunderpants Johnson's Hillbilly Orchestra will perform. Thru the Keyhole Burlesque will also appear as the Flufferettes. We hate to disappoint, but the Thru the Keyhole website stresses that their performance will be family-friendly. Last, but not least, visitors to the festival will witness an attempt to recreate the Prospect Hill Tower using Fluff and rice krispies. Try not to eat it - it's art.
We're guessing that former State Senator Jarrett Barrios, who once held a failed campaign against Fluffernutter sandwiches in school lunches, will not attend. But he might change his mind--it's hard to fight the Fluff.

I love Fluff in theory, but I never liked it to eat!
