Mayor Menino has gone so green that he might end up looking like Kermit the Frog. First Menino laid out his plan to improve life for cyclists in the city, and now he's drawing inspiration from Cape Wind by proposing wind turbines for City Hall Plaza.
The Globe reported on Saturday that the mayor wants a single turbine that can "generate up to one-quarter of the electricity used at City Hall."
Globe writer Peter Howe had more than a few questions about Menino's plan, including, "Would neighbors, including the federal government, tolerate it?" Hey, they've already been tolerating that sad plaza for long enough.
No one will oppose turbines at City Hall on aesthetic grounds--any change would make that wasteland of a plaza look better. The mayor is giving his environment and energy aide 60 days to do research on the subject. If the mayor's office is wondering how to pull off this idea, they can always talk to former gubernatorial candidate Christy Mihos, who installed smaller turbines at his gas stations on the Cape. He might also want to contact the architects who have offered up their ideas for improving City Hall's appearance.
