Family of Murdered Teen Gets Meeting With Deval Patrick
The death of 13-year-old Steven Odom by a stray bullet inspired a lot of talk about stopping violence on the street, but we've heard it all before. Odom's grieving family is trying to convert that talk into action. In a press conference yesterday afternoon, they called for a meeting with governor Deval Patrick -- and they got one.
In WBZ video of the press conference, Kimberly Odom, Steven's mother, spoke in a tone that was a mixture of grief and outrage. She said, "As a hurting mother I extend myself to speak for all the other hurting mothers, 'What is your office doing to end this hurt across the commonwealth?'" The WCVB footage also included Odom's anger at the idea that her son was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was doing something that any boy should be free to do--coming home after playing with friends.
Patrick didn't hem and haw--within 3 hours, he was meeting with the Odoms. He didn't speak to reporters. The Globe's Adrian Walker called it a "damage-control mission."
All charges alleged until proven under law. This image of Steven Odom is from WHDH. Bostonist is using it instead of the standard body outline. It's appeared in several local outlets.
