Sports Redux: Wheel of Fortune

wheeloffortune.JPGWe don't watch Wheel of Fortune any more - once they started spotting people five letters in the bonus round, the thrilling intellectual pursuit seemed to be missing. But we remember from childhood the portion of the show where the winning contestant got to pick out their winnings; the disembodied head floated in the upper-left corner of the screen, smiling and beaming as the camera panned all the marvelous prizes up for grabs.

Which is why we had a mental image all day yesterday of Tom Brady's head, smiling and beaming in the upper-left corner of the screen as the camera pans all of the wonderful receivers he has at his disposal.

Tom found Kyle Brady once (for a TD), Ben Watson once, Jabar Gaffney twice, Kevin Faulk three times, Randy Moss six times (one for a TD), Donte Stallworth seven times (one for a TD) and Wes Welker eleven times (2 TDs). If Laurence Maroney had been active, Brady would have found him. If Sammy Morris hadn't gotten hurt early on...if Hart Lee Dykes had shown up...Brady would have probably completed one to them too.

The result? A 48-27 steamrolling of the undefeated Cowboys. And that score is deceptive; the 'Boys hung around for most of the game, even leading in the third quarter. On the other hand, the Patriots tried to get greedy a couple of times, but Brady's two longest bombs to Moss missed their targets.

Tony Romo and the Cowboy offense gave the Pats' D their toughest test of the year, marching down the field a couple of times, and hitting Terrell Owens late in the second and Patrick Crayton early in the third to give Dallas the lead. But with 10 minutes to go, and the Cowboys down 14, Dallas coach Wade Phillips elected to kick the field goal (from the NE 5), meaning they would still need to score twice and stop the Patriots from performing a six-minute, game-ending drive (which they happily did). And you wonder why guys like Wade Phillips spend three out of every five years looking for head coaching jobs.

The Rockies won again. The Diamondbacks are one game away from collecting their Certificates of Participation.
