Biting the Crime: Stovell Speaks, BPD Goes to High School
After all the "enough is enough" blah-dee-blah from the city brass, people on the ground who have to deal with Boston crime every day are doing something about it. Pop Warner football coach Myron Stovell, who was shot in the leg this weekend by a teenage hothead with a gun, didn't let his injury stop him from attending a community meeting on the subject.
The meeting included parents and children who were on Stovell's Boston Bengals football team, and it was closed to media, which likely cut down on any grandstanding.
Meanwhile, a BPD officer, Larry Ellison, went to Madison Park High School in Roxbury to see how students were doing. He had a student escort. More than a few students weren’t happy to see him, and one charming young woman took it out on the escort, telling him, "Don't sit next to me, you snitch." At least the BPD is trying to talk to teenagers instead of automatically assuming they need to be in juvie.
If anyone has any questions about what is going on in the high-crime Boston neighborhoods, watch the documentary Shot in the Hood by BPD officer Bill Willis. The whole documentary is on YouTube, and it will give you an idea of the gun culture and how hard it is just for some teenagers in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan to walk down the street.
