Election Day: Tsongas Vs. Ogonowski--The Showdown
The special election to replace Rep. Marty Meehan in the Fifth Congressional District will be tomorrow. The candidates are Democrat Niki Tsongas and Republican Jim Ogonowski.
Tsongas is the widow of former Senator Paul Tsongas, and she has been able to bring in the big-time Democrat starpower. Ogonowski, a former member of the Air Force and National Guard, has been taking the door-to-door approach. The Globe said he planned "more than two dozen appearances" today.
Then again, Tsongas is no slouch when it comes to canvassing. The Globe did an almost-too-intimate piece on how Tsongas' feet are holding up through all this campaigning: "Niki Tsongas pulled off her black heels for balance, revealing swollen feet. Her red nail polish was chipped and faded, and her toes were taped with Band-Aids." (We dare the Globe to stare at a male candidate's tootsies next time.)
MSNBC's First Read political blog notes that the race is close because Ogonowski's "running as the outsider while painting Tsongas as the insider, given her last name and the fact that Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi have campaigned for her."
On the issues, the candidates appear to divide along party lines. Get more info on each candidate at their respective websites:
