Authorial Intent: Moms, Romance, Angry Krugman

101707-krugman.jpgAuthorial Intent is Bostonist's wrap-up of readings around the city.

Thursday, October 18

Joan Blades, 6:30 pm, Rabb Auditorium, Boston Public Library, Ford Hall Forum Series.
Blades is the cofounder of moveon.org, and she's got a lot on her mind besides "General Betray-Us," which Congress gnawed on like they had nothing better to do. She'll be talking about momsrising.org, her organization that pushes for more rights for moms and families.

Saturday, October 20

Frank, Mark, and Pauline Kramer Square Dedication Ceremony, 11:00 am, Harvard Book Store, More info.
This event isn't a reading but a celebration of those who have helped bring spectacular authors to the area. Frank, Mark, and Pauline Kramer, who founded the store, will get their names on the corner of Plympton Street and Mass Ave.

Monday, October 22

John Fulton and Joshua Henkin, 7:00 pm, Brookline Booksmith
Two novelists who studied at the University of Michigan pair up to read from their recent books. Fulton, who teaches at UMass-Boston, follows grieving people who attempt new relationships and romances in his short-story collection. Henkin's novel covers a marriage that takes a hit after a string of infidelities.

Paul Krugman, First Parish Church Meetinghouse, Corner of Church St. and Mass Ave (via Harvard Book Store), $5. More Info.
From the title of his latest, you know exactly where Krugman stands. In The Conscience of a Liberal, Krugman tells his readers that now is the time to act if they want improved health care and real social services. Krugman also isn't shy about giving the Bush Administration a good pounding--Salon refers to the book as a "book-length 'I told you so.'"

Tuesday, October 23

Ken Burns, 7:00 pm, First Parish Church Meetinghouse, Corner of Church St. and Mass Ave (via Harvard Book Store), $5. More info.
Burns will discuss his latest documentary, The War, and its companion book. Bostonist had the opportunity to see a preview of The War, at Coolidge Corner Theatre. When we spoke with WWII vets who had attended the screening, they said unanimously that Burns got all that was good and bad about the war exactly right.
