Will Boston and Trigen Tame the Manholes?
The mayor's office put out a release yesterday stating that Trigen, the company in charge of the steam pipes snaking under the city, has agreed to review the condition of its pipes:
Trigen has committed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of its entire steam system and has commissioned an outside firm with expertise in steam energy to perform this review. This assessment is now underway and includes an immediate inspection of critical infrastructure and an aerial infrared survey to detect any steam releases.
Along with the infrared survey, Trigen will also use underground miniature cameras. The review should be done in mid-December. Given the recent outbreak of pipe bursts that sent asbestos into the air and the age of the pipes, is it safe to assume that they are going to find more problems? And, if they do, how much is it going to cost to fix them? Are Trigen and the city ready to foot that bill?
For the record, Bostonist hasn't forgotten the explosion on New Chardon Street (video is available) and the mess that a pipe burst made downtown. We're still walking around any and all manhole covers.
Can't get enough of that album cover! From Amazon.
