Belichick: Funny Ha Ha, or Funny Weird?
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick seems like a lot of things--sneaky, serious, and smelly since he insists on wearing the same stuff all the time. And now it turns out that he's funny, too.
Here's the first example John Tomase at the Herald provides of Belichick's humor:
During training camp, rookie Brandon Meriweather granted an interview to the Herald in which he talked about how lucky he was to practice every day against Wes Welker, “one of the best slot receivers in the league.” Belichick has a particular disdain for rookies speaking about pretty much anything, so at the next team meeting, he let Meriweather have it. “Brandon Meriweather thinks Wes Welker is one of the best slot receivers in the league,” Belichick started, according to a former player who was there but didn’t want to be identified for fear of incurring his ex-coach’s wrath. “How the (expletive) would Brandon Meriweather know! You don’t know anything, so shut the (expletive) up!
Ho-ho! Hee-hee! Belichick is so funny that former players quake in their boots before telling war stories about the guy. He's so funny that he cuts down rookies who dare to judge anything!
Don't get Bostonist wrong--Belichick isn't expected to be a nice guy. He's expected to win, and he does exactly what he's paid to do. But he's not paid to be funny, and, based on the above example, he is most definitely not.
Tomase's piece, in which players and friends like Lenny Clarke dish anecdotes about Belichick that make him seem more human, is amusing--but Belichick still isn't funny ha ha. He's more like funny weird.
