That's right. Former New York City mayor and Republican presidential aspirant Rudy Giuliani has come out-- as a Red Sox fan.
Giuliani said in public that he was backing the Red Sox in the World Series. Of course, he said it while he was in Boston and asking for votes, and a politician will do anything for a vote. But Mr. New York, Mayor of the Nation, 9/11 Every Other Word said he's rooting for the Red Sox.
New York is sure to unleash a collective howl, but Giuliani tried to justify his choice by saying he's an AL fan.
Bostonist's first response? Eat it, Yankees! The second response? Is this something the Red Sox Nation wants or needs? And the third response? Should we even care which team someone who wants to run the country roots for?
Okay, before we flop into a puddle of political guilt, we're going back to the first response! Thanks, Rudy. Good luck weathering all the flip-floppery flack that will soon fly your way.
Update: Our Gothamist colleagues are working on getting that knife from between their shoulder blades: "Hey - maybe FOX will invite Rudy to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in Boston and he can wear a Red Sox hat! Think of all the votes that will get you, Rudy." And the commenters are pissed.
