Somerville's got good claim to the "Monster Mash" label. Bobby Pickett, responsible for penning the perennial Halloween hit (which is one of only three records to hit the Billboard Top 100 three separate times), was a Somerville native. Pickett passed away in April of this year, so this will be the world's first Halloween without him. To celebrate his Halloween contributions and raise money for other aspiring artists, the Somerville Arts Council is holding a Monster Mash Halloween benefit at PA's Lounge tonight.

The main attraction is the horrifying hip-hop group ZWA (Zombies with Attitude), featuring Mac Swell and TD from Big Digits and Karen Tsiakals from UV Protection. They'll be donning authentic zombie getup and playing their zesty brand of zombie rock well into the night. Additional sonic scariness comes from DjBC, the super stylings of "wii-jay" Mark E. Moon, and artwork by The Miracle Five. Horror films, cupcakes, and candy help round out the Halloween experience.

No Halloween party would be complete without a costume contest, of course. The Monster Mash contest is hosted by Halloween expert and author Lesley Bannatyne, Vintage Etc. and Union Boot proprietress Elizabeth Lefavour, and SCUL-rider/artist Skunk, and features some wonderful prizes. So suit up in your best Halloween gear and prepare to dance off those candy calories at PA's lounge tonight. It's all for a good cause--Halloween! (Oh, and that whole "art" thing is pretty cool, too.)
