Two of the big car-sharing companies are joining forces. Zipcar, which is based in Cambridge, and its competitor, Flexcar announced today that they will merge.
Mark D. Norman, who is listed as the current CEO for Flexcar, will become Zipcar's new president and Chief Operating Officer. Scott Griffith will remain as Zipcar's CEO. In a conference call yesterday, Norman and Griffith talked up their companies' new WonderTwin powers.
As is the case in any press conference regarding a business change, the leaders declared that the merger would improve consumer choice. Griffith also mentioned that the merger would mean "access to more hybrid vehicles." During the conference, the idea came up that the new Zipcar could help remove "over half a million personally owned cars in North America alone."
The merger shouldn't affect your life directly, as Greater Boston doesn't have Flexcar. But the fact that the company is growing and keeping its headquarters in Cambridge is good business for the area.
