Bein' Green: Biofuels and Buzzards Bay
We've talked plenty about wind turbines. Now local legislators seem to be setting even more green goals. Legislators have proposed setting mandates to increase the blending of biofuels with heating oil.
The Globe also reports that the legislature isn't stopping with biofuel: "The bill filed yesterday also would exempt from the state's 23-cent gasoline tax any gasoline that contains ethanol produced from plant products other than corn. The exemption would give gasoline dealers a financial incentive to buy fuel blended with the new type of ethanol and give a handful of Massachusetts high-tech companies an incentive to produce it."
Non-corn ethanol, or cellulosic ethanol, might make everyone happy. People get their power, and high-tech companies make money innovating and saving the world.
In more urgent environmental issues, via southcoasttoday.com, the State Senate has approved legislation designed to cut down on oil spills in Buzzards Bay. If passed, tugboats must accompany both single- and double-hulled oil ships, and ships will be fined even more if a spill happens.
Now, if only that Beauty & the Geek aspirant Bostonist met recently can figure out how to use taco grease to power his car, Massachusetts will be number-one in the eco-movement.
