MittWatch: Romney Advertises on Gay.com. Hold Up, Really?

110707-pride-flag.jpgIt's safe to say both the anti-gay presidential aspirant and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and readers of gay.com got quite a shock when they saw a Mitt Romney for President ad on the website. Was Romney letting his rainbow flag fly?

Jim Rutenberg at the New York Times reports that it is no joke: "Over the course of at least two days in August, [readers of gay.com] may well also have seen banner advertisements about the Republican presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney … according to an analysis of campaign Web advertising provided by the Nielsen Online, AdRelevance, monitoring service."

Even if someone on Team Romney placed the ads as part of a package deal, how did they not notice that the ads might wind up on gay.com? The director of online strategy for Romney, Mindy Finn, said that the Internet was "uncharted territory." Gay.com is definitely "uncharted territory" for Romney.

The Romney ads also appeared on fanfiction.net. Just imagine what a gay fan-fiction writer might do if he decided to take on Romney as a topic! Then again, maybe it's better that you don't.

Maybe Romney's decided to flip flop again on gay issues. That man flips so much he's like a fish out of water.

the Internet was "uncharted territory"

Kind of an odd position for your "director of online strategy" to take, isn't it?
