Yesterday's Election Results

110607-vote-2.jpgBoston City Council: The four winners in the at-large race were incumbents Michael Flaherty, Stephen Murphy, Sam Yoon, and new arrival John Connolly. Incumbent Felix Arroyo didn't make the cut. Now Murphy and Connolly will need to figure out how to live with each other after Connolly's anonymous mailers, which accused Murphy of always looking for other jobs.

Michael Pahre at Brighton Centered reports that Mark Ciommo defeated Greg Glennon for the District 9 slot by 948 votes. All other city councilors who were running were re-elected.

Cambridge City Council: The Cambridge Chronicle lists the winners: Henrietta Davis, Tim Toomey, David Maher, Ken Reeves, Marjorie Decker, Brian Murphy, Denise Simmons, Craig Kelley and Sam Seidel.

As long as we're talking about learning to live with each other, Reeves and the Chronicle will need to do that as well since Reeves called their endorsement "meaningless." Edward Colby considers how the relationship between Reeves and the Chronicle may have impacted the election: "The weekly paper’s endless coverage of his credit card bills and dining spending habits might have spurred voters to come to the mayor’s defense."

The winners for the School Committee race were Marc McGovern, Fred Fantini, Patty Nolan, Luc Schuster, Joe Grassi, and Nancy Tauber. Incumbent Richard Harding was defeated.

More on Somerville's elections, big news in Watertown, and crappy voter turnout after the jump!

Somerville Mayor and Aldermen: Things seemed calm in the Somerville race. The Somerville News reported that all the incumbent aldermen won their races, but in the race for the at-large position, one candidate is requesting a recount.

Watertown: Bostonist wasn't watching Watertown all that closely since we're primarily interested in the exploits of alleged "Curlergate" perp and Watertown city councilor Marilyn Devaney. But h2otown reports that Devaney was taken off the council by a mere 6 votes.

Embarrassingly low voter turnout everywhere: The Somerville News summed it up well: "Rain, Signs, and No People." The Globe is scratching its collective head trying to find out why only 13.6 percent of registered voters in Boston turned out.

That's easy. It rained. It was a Tuesday. Despite the laws saying a person must get time off for voting, a lot of people feel like they can't leave. Not everyone knows what city councilors do exactly. And--we're talking to you, Globe--maybe they didn't turn out because the local papers didn't really cover it in the first place.
