Bostonist sat down with Kevin Miller, one of the artistic directors behind Ellipsis, a Boston-based mime troupe that's hoping to knock the local theater scene on its ass. This Sunday Ellipsis will be hosting a workshop to preview some of their original material and hopefully receive feedback and suggestions from the audience. If miming craziness isn't enough, copious amounts of fine cheeses will be served.
Kevin spoke about the art of mime and made sure to set what he does apart from street-miming. Their goal can be described in part by their name. An ellipsis, by definition, is a point of suspension before action--that moment where you hold your breath and wait for impact. In mime, when the vocal element is taken out of the performance, it encourages the audience to pay close attention to the action on stage. The result is far from a typical passive watching experience. Kevin described it as both primal and ethereal; primal because modern human language is a relatively new phenomenon while action and movement is both timeless and innate, ethereal because the audience is forced to project their own creative and imaginative point of view on the actors. That fact is the key to what Ellipsis is trying to do--create a fully symbiotic experience where both the actors and audience work together to produce something totally unique. Oh, and they want you to have fun as well. More on the rocking music after the jump.

Kevin spoke of music being a major inspiration behind the show. Even though there are no spoken words, this show is anything but silent. The troupe works with music from many genres, artists run the gamut from RJD2 (who supports Ellipsis, turns out his father had mime experience), Wild Light, NoFX, to classical pieces performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Aside from garnering their own audience, the cast seeks to introduce talented up-and-coming artists to a larger market.
Apart from the all high-falutin' definitions and their lofty goal of revolutionzing theater and performance art, Kevin Miller, Alex Sherman, Armen Nercessian, and the rest of the rotating cast realize one very important fact. They're dressed as mimes....and mimes are inherently silly. So come out this Sunday to support local art and "indulge in the absurd" while experiencing something like you never have before. Oh, and eat cheese. Lots of free cheese.
