Sports Redux: Nothin's Gonna Touch You In These Golden Years

bowiegolden.jpgSo we were driving home from a party Saturday night, and heard on the radio that BC lost. Almost reflexively, we went, "Figures; as soon as we start paying attention to BC, they start losi....".

Then we stopped and thought for a minute. Being reflexively negative and miserable just doesn't cut it when four of the five pro teams in town are either undefeated, in the championship game, or current World Champs. We know we're not the first to make this remark, but it's a pretty freaking good time to be a Boston sports fan right now.

In baseball, award season begins today, and there's much speculation that Dustin Pedroia will get a very happy phone call as AL Rookie of the Year, beating out Tampa Bay's Delmon Young and two Japanese pitchers we know and love. Pedroia's potential honor is even more amazing now that we know he played for two months with a broken bone in his hand. Hope he's well enough to lift that trophy.

In basketball, the Celtics are chillin' today, getting ready to face Jim O'Brien's Pacers tomorrow night. Pierce, for sure, should be familiar with O'Brien's fast-paced, 3-bombing style. O'Brien, for his part, must wonder what his life would be like now if he hadn't resigned out of frustration with Danny Ainge's constant roster overhauls.

In football, while Bill Belichick spent the entire week holed up in his bunker, looking for ways to tame the mighty Bills, the rest of PatriotWorld got served up a delicious dish of schadenfreude last night. Peyton Manning threw more interceptions in one game than Brady's thrown all year, and Benedict Vinatieri muffed a game-winning field goal, to hand the Colts a shocking loss in San Diego.

The Revolution are fired up about getting another shot at the MLS Cup Sunday, against defending champs Houston. If you feel like a road trip this weekend, the Revs would love to see you in DC on Sunday, and will help you sit with other Revs fans and get you a discounted hotel. Here's how to order.

The Bruins...well, they are what they are. But push any negative thoughts away, because this is about as good as it's ever gonna get around here.

Michael,
I would suggest that those of us who supported the Sox and Pats prior to their championships enjoyed said championships even more. Re BC, things are never quite as bad or as good as the front-running media portrays. If you choose to no longer follow them now that they have lost a couple, that's OK.(A bit more appropriate for the Gothamist however, IMHO). BC is still in the hunt for the championship of the football conference they just joined. Things could be a lot worse.

BC is what we thought BC is. Good but not truly ready for prime time. If they win Saturday, they'll be in the ACC title game and could end up in a major bowl game. Only the most intoxicated triple eagles thought they'd actually play for the national title.

More important in front-running media news is the growth in sign A-Rod feeding frenzy. Media types from Massarotti to Lobel to Shaughnessy to Gary Tanguay (okay, he's the JV) already have their A-Rod kneepads on and have assumed the position.

At least Michael Felger is not joining in the A-Rod foreplay.

Bears watching...
