Project Runway Season 4 Begins: Episode 1

prorunep1.jpgNot only does Project Runway Season 4 feature a contestant named Sweet P (was the "ea" part of "pea" that intrusive?), it also has the requisite dude with whack hair, dude with whack facial hair, and a fabulous first episode title: "Sew Me What You Got." Sweet!

None of the designers appear to have Massachusetts connections, but models Lauren, Marcia, and Wendi are all from the Bay State. Lauren started modeling in Boston, and Marcia was "discovered" in a nightclub here. You never know when those model scouts are out and about in the hub!

We were a little thrown off by the experience of watching runway walking instead of food tasting, but we're moving back into Project Runway mode after enjoying this past season of Top Chef. There were some beautiful constructions on display last night--some we might actually even wear. More on the outfits and info on who was auf'd by Heidi after the jump!

rami.jpgUsually there are at least a few screamingly bad outfits in the first episode, but this season of Project Runway really started with a bang. Even the worst dresses in the episode were simply sloppily constructed or not quite right in their conception. Rami (left) won with a beautiful, flowing (if slightly toga-like) gray dress that was nearly perfect except for its Roman reminiscence and Carrie Bradshaw rosette (which was, in Michael Kors' words, "a little M.O.B.--mother of the bride"). We weren't as gaga over Christian's self-described "sculptural, European-inspired" puffy-sleeved plaid jacket as the judges were, but give him credit for good construction.

The bottom two contestants were Elisa, who ruined a sleek blue dress with a grass-stained mermaid-tail mess of a train, and Simone, who ran into some time troubles and didn't end up sewing (or designing) particularly well. Her dress and jacket didn't match, prompting Michael to say her model looked like she got dressed in the dark. Elisa was advised to "trust your instincts and edit," and Simone had to pack her scissors and go because she didn't come up with even the beginning of a good dress.

So we're off and running down the runway with season 4 of Project Runway! Will Ricky learn to push it and get beyond his lingerie background? How many times will Tim Gunn say "make it work"? Will one of the Massachusetts models make it to the top? Tune in to Bravo--or just read our recaps--to find out!
