Sports Redux: Bruins Finally Support Thomas

Tim Thomas has been a rock in goal for the Bruins; even when they've been floundering offensively - and make no mistake, they have - Thomas has played well enough to keep them in the game.

But last night against Toronto, another team struggling to put the biscuit in the basket, the B's found their rhythm and controlled the tempo, punishing old friend Andrew Raycroft for a 5-2 win. (Your humble correspondent was there, doing a liveblog for BostonNOW, if you want details and a random digression about the currency of Kazakhstan). The win vaults the Bruins over Toronto and into, amazingly, sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

While the rest of the local teams were quiet (we bet the Miami Heat and Buffalo Bills are saying, "Yeah...too quiet" right about now), the news was filled with breaking stories about notable baseball villains. A-Rod signed with the Yankees after all, which is good, because they deserve each other.

But the big story was Barry Bonds, who's gone from being the toast of 4% of the nation just a few months ago to a five-count indictment on perjury and obstruction of justice. Bonds, who was cut by the Giants after the 2007 season and is a free agent, may be offered a 30-year contract by the federal government.

The Globe has a long article about how the Celtics are suddenly hot. O RLY? It was a nice read until we got to the line, "Hollywood celebrities are clamoring for courtside seats". Oh, boy, maybe Ben Affleck will show up. When do the Celtics play the Yankees, anyway? (Note: our discomfort does not extend to the brothers Wahlberg, who have proven their fan chops by doing things like showing up at games in Sacramento even in the worst years. You guys are all right.)

speaking of villains, what about the moves the yanks are making to pick up lowell -- when they are already paying a king's ransom at third base? mike lowell at first? for the yankees?!

I'm not terribly interested in the Yankees for any reason these days. I'm more focused on what the Sox do than what the Yankees might be up to.

Everyone likes Mike Lowell and wants him to be back in Boston. Let's not get carried away. He's not Mike Schmidt. He can be replaced.

A comment on Donnie Wahlberg...He was on the Celtics bandwagon early this summer. He was on ESPN First Take hinting they might make a run at the NBA title. It might be a good clip for some website about Boston to provide a link to. HINT HINT.
