Boston Blotter: BPD Goes on Gun Hunt
--The BPD is starting yet another crime-stopping program that is sure to raise eyebrows. In this case, police will search bedrooms of teenagers suspected of having guns without a warrant. Regarding the alarming "without a warrant" part, the BPD plans to ask the parent for permission first.
The rationale for this is that some parents may know their kids have guns, but they don't know what to do about it. Commish Ed Davis and DA Dan Conley, who are apparently staying friends, have approval from some local clergy and the family of 13-year-old Steven Odom, who was killed in the crossfire of a gunfight.
Police have also said that they won't prosecute if they find a gun that hasn't been involved in a shooting or if they happen to turn up "modest amounts" of pot, but a police representative said it depends on the size.
--A man was killed early this morning during a fight at Glenville Avenue. The BPD found that the 21-year-old victim fell from the roof of the building.
--Bank robbers have gone on a spree. According to the Globe, robbers stole from "two banks in Brighton, one in Dorchester, and another in Medford, where a man wearing a Yankees hat entered a Citizens Bank and fired a handgun just before the branch closed Thursday night, police said. No one was injured." In one of the Brighton robberies, a dye pack exploded, and police retrieved the cash, but no one involved with any of the robberies has been caught.
