Bostonist never thought we'd hear the words "ukulele" and "noir" used together, but now it's happened. And it sounds pretty rad. Tonight's installment of Ukulele Noir, an assortment of skilled ukulele players, will feature Craig Robertson, Melvern Taylor and the Fabulous Meltones, Uncle Shoe, and the East Boston Make Out Club Band. All will strum tiny ukulele strings to make big sounds.
Craig Robertson, the founder and emcee of Ukulele Noir, has been playing ukulele for years. He's released two CDs, That Dress and Practical Hypnotism, and also dabbles in art and poetry. Listen to "This Is My House" online.
Melvern Taylor and the Fabulous Meltones are from Lowell and have released a CD titled Fabuloso. Melvern himself plays ukulele and is accompanied by Meltones Johnny Grant, Dave Livingston, and Bob Nash on bass, guitar, and drums. Their hot sounds will "melt" your heart.
Uncle Shoe are a riotous group dedicated to fun, vaudeville-esque tunes, sometimes garbed in outfits to match.
Nearly as conducive to hookups as Makeoutclub, the East Boston Make Out Club Band plays freaky ukulele tunes that will have you headbanging and shaking your booty in no time. As the ladies say, "Making out isn't just about making out--it's about rocking out and sometimes drinking beer." And what could be better than that?
