Brattle Theatre, Cambridge, $15
More info

The Brattle Theatre is holding its fourth-annual silent art auction so you can do some good for local culture and make your apartment less ugly.

Bids start at $35, which is pretty cheap for getting your foot in the door as an art collector. The Brattle has previewed some of the works so you can glance at them ahead of time. The options range from bold, abstract prints by Lara Loutrel to beautiful sepia photos from Meg Birnbaum to the clever and colorful juxtapositions from Miriam Shenitzer.

Jennifer Layzer's photographs depicting the Salem Witch Trials through Barbie dolls are especially fascinating. At first glance, it looks like a Barbie Puritan playset, and then the ugly twists emerge. On her website, Layzer explains her goal, "I use contemporary plastic dolls to comment on the commercialization and trivialization of horrific events."

As is common with any art event, booze--in the form of Harpoon Beer and wine--and nibbles will be available.
