Review: Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter @ Somerville Theatre

There might have been a couple nosebleed seats in the balcony left at last night's very well attended Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black's Somerville Theater show, but, for those of you who missed it, you really missed a treat. As evidenced by various available YouTube clips, Black and Showalter are extremely funny on their own, but together they brought humor to an entirely new level. The two have been comedy collaborators for 20 years and brought us TV shows like "The State" and "Stella" and the movie Wet, Hot, American Summer - they definitely know each other (but not Biblically, we think).
Showalter warmed the crowd up with some of his great sing-a-longs to various pop tunes and his excellent Powerpoint presentations where he illustrated his prowess at online Scrabble. He also shared a slideshow of his experiences at Camp Mohawk in the Berkshires at age 12. Showalter joins a pantheon of artists using Powerpoint on stage, but I can tell you that he's definitely much funnier than David Byrne could ever hope to be.

Then the hand-off from Showalter to Michael Ian Black began. "Began" is the appropriate word because the two spent more time onstage together than they did individually and their improv'd repartee was absolutely hilarious. They sang some songs together, bantered with the audience continually, and gave each other a (mock) hard time.
After Showalter ceded the stage to him, Michael Ian Black [check out his Interview for Bostonist.com] got about a half hour of solo time, featuring some tidbits off of his excellent CD, I Am A Wonderful Man, as well as plenty of new material. Then Showalter's voice could be heard from off-stage, engaging Black in a kind of schizophrenic sub-conscious dialogue until Black demanded Showalter return to the stage where they entertained for at least another half-hour. All told, Showalter and Black put on a comedy show that was over 2 hours long and worth every minute of your time.
Unfortunately, no Boston dates are on the horizon for their tour, but they will be playing at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza in NYC tomorrow night, so if you're heading that way or know someone in NY metro area, the show is highly recommended. If you couldn't make it to the show, there is a logical alternative: Michael Showalter is touring in support of his new CD, Sandwiches & Cats, Michael Ian Black's CD is I Am A Wonderful Man, and Season One of "Stella" is now available on DVD.

I absolutely loved this show. What you can't quite make out in the scrabble picture is Showalter's 'word de resistance' - penissockser. He used all his letters and got 50 bonus points. Score!
I loved the combination of the two different comedic styles. Showalter was more off-the-cuff: his notes included such lead-ins as "vaginas are strange, discuss" and his music and dancing made it a lot of fun. Black's routine was more straight-forward stand-up, though no less entertaining. I agree with Tomdog that the real magic happened when the two of them played off each other and combined their unique styles.
Great great show over-all and good news for all you State fans out there. MIB let the audience know that they are filming a new State movie that will be released in conjunction with the State Series DVD coming out next year.
