It's not on any wall calendars, but December 3rd is David Lynch Day in Cambridge, at least according to the Brattle Theatre. Last year, Lynch debuted Inland Empire at the Brattle, and the Cambridge city council honored the director by giving him his own day. This year, the Brattle will celebrate by offering theatergoers a pair of Lynch classics and dessert.
Bostonist lost a month of college to Twin Peaks (1990), Lynch's television series, and we know we aren't the only ones. Part soap opera parody, part crime drama, the show featured goofy metaphysics, an inept FBI, a Manichean beauty queen, and a glimpse at the shocking violence of an all-American lumber town. Tomorrow, the Brattle offers a free screening of the pilot episode, where you can meet (or reencounter) Agent Cooper, Laura and Leland Palmer, the Log Lady, and Nadine Hurley's drapes. As an added bonus, the Brattle will serve free pie and coffee, Agent Cooper's favorite dish, so you can watch the show the way it should been seen.
Screening beforehand will be Twin Peaks's thematic predecessor, Blue Velvet (1986). It's the perfect movie for those who have always wanted to see Dean Stockwell lip syncing Roy Orbison in heavy make-up.
