Greil Marcus goes in search of the American spirit and finds it in Philip Roth, David Lynch, David Thomas of Pere Ubu, and other unpredictable sources. The Village Voice writes that Marcus' latest "basks in the possibilities of American Exceptionalism."

Frank McCourt, Angela and the Baby Jesus, First Parish Church at Church Street and Mass Ave (via Harvard Book Store), cancelled. More info.
McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes, writes about Angela's childhood in Ireland, but he won't be talking about it here.

Local mystery author Simon will read from her latest, in which Theda Krakow gets mixed up with animal activists, designer drugs, and the disappearance of her cat.
