Boston Blotter: Cutting Parties Never a Good Idea

102207-party-police.jpg--BPD News was still down the last time we checked. We feel adrift. But we saw a few entries on Wicked Local

--Police arrested individuals involved in a "cutting party" in Sudbury on Tuesday. Norman Miller of the MetroWest Daily News described the incident as "booze-fueled." The cutting also enters a gray legal area because the cutting may have been consensual. The lawyer said that Sarah Handy, 23, cut Meagan Hauff, 21, both of Marlborough, at Hauff's request but, according to Handy's lawyer, "I don't think anyone expected (the cut) to be this deep."

In an additional detail that would make doctors and germophobes faint, everyone involved in the cutting party allegedly used the same knife. If the BPD blotter writer were here, he or she would write, "CUTTING PARTIES NEVER A GOOD IDEA."

--If you are in Roslindale, know that Officer David Cataldo is watching you. Jessica Smith of the Roslindale Transcript took a ride with Cataldo and discovered that he has an eye for crime. One of his colleagues told Smith: "If you know Dave, you’ll see him at 4 p.m. at roll call, and then you’ll see him at 4:15 arresting someone." Cataldo also keeps an eye on pizza delivery guys to make sure they don't get robbed.

--The UMass-Boston Mass Media scratched its collective head over a particularly immature crime at Wheatley Hall: "A report of vandalism and malicious destruction was filed from Wheatley when someone tried to etch something into a door. Because that's totally not, like, soooo seventh grade or anything."

All charges alleged until proven under law.

What is a cutting party?

Good question. I should have explained it. "Cutting" is a phenomenon that used to be talked about a year or so ago but seems to have fallen off the radar. Some people become addicted to cutting themselves for various psychological reasons. Most discussions of cutting suggest that young women cut themselves the most, but, as the full MetroWest article states, it's rarely done in groups.
