Representing on Reality TV: Strong Survivor Smells
Now that David, the Somerville LARPer, took the grand prize in Beauty and the Geek, we are focusing our attentions on Denise, the martial-arts aficionado with the heroic hair. Denise has hung on throughout several rough rounds of Survivor:China.
This week, Denise caught a break since the reward challenge involved the presence of family members. The producers saved Denise's husband for last--for good reason. He is a big, burly dude who looks like he would happily toss anyone who gave Denise a hard time. While hugging, they even came close to a full-on makeout session. When she had to walk away to prepare for the challenge, she almost tore off his shirt while leaving.
The magnetism between Denise and her husband served them well. While blindfolded and separated, each Survivor contestant and family member had to find each other, navigate through the maze, and come to a center platform. Whoever reached the platform first was the winner, and Denise and her husband made it.
The reward was a feast on a boat. Denise picked the scheming Todd and Amanda to go with her, probably as some sort of insurance. After that, the family members got to hang out. Right before leaving, Denise and her husband hugged, and he admitted, "My God, you smell bad!" But he still hugged her. That's love. That also might be why he found her so quickly in the maze.
The outcome of the game was up to Denise. She had a choice--to vote out Erik, who wasn’t part of the original alliance, or Todd, who would stab Denise's back in a second. Todd and Amanda had already said they wanted Denise out, yet Denise, out of some innate sense of loyalty, stuck with her original alliance and helped get Erik out. That means Denise might be next to go.
As for Kid Nation, the show is winding down. The Massachusetts kids were quiet this week, except that Guylan proved he comes in might handy if you need to move an alpaca from one place to another.

How come no love for Courtney (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor15/survivors/courtney.shtml) on Survivor? She's from Boston and has also made it pretty far in the season!
Now that the shows are winding down or Massachusetts folks are getting eliminated from their shows, I plan on writing about Courtney more often. I knew she was from Boston, but I thought she went to college or acted in New York. Thank you for her bio link--I didn't realize she went to school here, too, and I'll write more about her for the next episode.
