It's pretty cold out in Boston these days, but what better way to warm up than with some Fiery Furnaces? Sibling bands are sort of over, but Eleanor and Matt Friedberger are still going strong with their latest release, Widow City. Released in October, the 70s-inspired album is a little less concept-driven and difficult than previous FF releases like Rehearsing My Choir, a narrative from the Friedbergers' grandma Olga. Blueberry Boat is still the classic record for this band, but Widow City may be on its way up--despite the downplayed experimentalism, Pitchfork didn't hate it, saying that "songs offer tightly scripted collages that cop sounds from scattershot prog and free-jazz, in and around funk interludes, flute-y soft-rock idylls, jacked-up percussion fills, and patchworks of sampled noises."
Openers MGMT and Michael Goodman and The Mike (surely it's not an accident that these bands have such similar acronyms?) offer danceable electro-glam grooves to help you warm up for the Furnaces themselves. The heat will be cranked up tonight at this show, and there's no need to worry about the bill.
